Ink Brush Art Therapy and Ghetto Media are pleased to offer a digital story telling group for men!.
This inclusive group is for men (between 18 and 65+ years) of all backgrounds & abilities, starting with an 8-week pilot program, that’s an introduction to storytelling with film and digital media, with the aim of writing, story boarding, filming and editing a 3-minute film. The course will be facilitated by David Jenkins (a local filmmaker) and Bella Insch, Registered Art Therapist at Ink Brush Therapy in Canberra. Interested NDIS participants are encouraged to utalise their funding to access the group. Participants will be encouraged to bring what ideas and equipment they a familiar with and create within a peer support environment.
START DATE ~ 3rd of May @5:30 pm- 7pm - for 8 weeks
Course Outline
1. Introduction to the course: An overview, how to safely tell our stories, group cohesion and guidelines. A look at basic concepts such as story writing (defining audiences), storyboarding, lighting and filming.
2. Storyboarding and Writing: A firm foundation in film. Creating a theme and meaning with your plot, theme and characters. (with special guest speakers)
3. Cinematography and Editing: Why think about the camera and the lighting? Basic concepts such as lighting, depth of field, tracking and panning etc. - Creating film and screenplay ideas, themes around creativity and inspiration session
4. Film Project - Developing and working through your film project.
5. Film Project: Putting it all together. Working on your own short film. Setting limits and goals. Getting used to challenges and working with limitations
6. Film Project – as above
7. Film Project – as above
8. Film Screening: Screening of our films, summary and wrap up. Exploring ideas such as where to from here? Entering competitions and festivals.
About the facilitators
David Jenkins: David has been working in the disability sector in Canberra (mental health) for over 5 years and has been producing short films for about 4 years, starting with an entry in a local film festival. He is a passionate writer of poetry and prose and approaches film and community sector projects with a light heart and in a fun way. He has a degree in Ambulance Studies and worked for a short time as an ambulance paramedic before deciding life was too short to not be creative.
Bella Insch is a visual artist & registered Art Therapist and a provider for the NDIS. She has a passionate interest in art making as a method for therapeutic self-expression. Bella has a private practice in Civic where she sees individuals, families and groups in the Ink Brush art therapy studio. She works with different community organisations in the ACT and has facilitated Film Making workshops and groups for adults around social issues /inclusiveness. Bella's approach is caring & recovery focused. It is underpinned by mindfulness, DBT and counselling theory. As well as co-facilitating the Men’s digital story telling group, Bella runs a weekly Art journaling for health and wellbeing group, The 41 Art Journals exchange project and the Embracing our imperfections crafternoon group.
About Art Therapy: Art Therapy is a form of psychology that includes the use of painting, ceramics and other forms of art-making as a means of self expression, within a therapeutic relationship. As allied health practitioners, Art Therapists are required to complete a Masters in Art Therapy and hold professional registration with ANZATA (the Australian and New Zealand Art Therapy Association). Benefits include increased wellbeing, independence, sustainable coping skills, emotional regulation, social engagement and enhanced self-care.
